I was born in Longmont, CO on Feb. 15, 1955 to Steve and Wilma (Billie) Nikkel. My father was a barber and had his own shop, Steve’s Barber Shop and Steam Bath located in the 300 block of Main Street. He then sold real estate in Longmont for many years. My mother was a Registered Nurse at the Longmont Hospital and then the Director of Nurses for the Foothills Nursing Home for most of my formative years. She is now deceased.
I attended public schools in Longmont, graduating from Longmont High School in 1973. I attended the University of Northern Colorado for two years and then transferred to the University of Colorado in Boulder where I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1977.
On July 1st, 1977 I married Kurt Finley-certainly one of my best decisions. Kurt is the President and CEO of Colorado Powersports and a Realtor at Remax Traditions. Together we raised two fine sons, K.J. and Steven. They also both graduated from Longmont High and the University of Colorado. K.J. works for the US Department of State, Diplomatic Security Division. He and his family are currently posted in Washington D.C.. Steven is working at Biomet in Broomfield as Manager of Financial Reporting and Analytics. He and his family live in Denver. I now have three perfect grandsons and it is my goal to spoil them all.
I have worn many hats in my life. Before I had children I worked for the Boulder Police Department as a Patrol Complaint Specialist. I was also a Realtor and a Political Consultant. After the boys went to school, I worked in the mortgage industry. I started out part time answering phones and ended up as a Mortgage Loan Officer at First National Bank.
I now work for the Colorado Association of Commerce and Industry and have for the last fifteen years. I am the Manager of Member Involvement. I make certain our members are fully engaged and happy with our work. I also developed the Grassroots program. This is a program to engage business people to fight against bad for business legislation. One of my favorite tasks is to work with the local Chambers of Commerce across the state.
I currently serve on the National League of Cities’ Community and Economic Development Steering Committee, the Longmont Area Economic Council Board, Longmont Planning & Zoning Commission, Museum Advisory Board, Longmont Cable Trust Board and the Longmont Sister Cities Board. I am a past member of the Longmont Parks & Recreation Advisory Board and the Golf Advisory Board.
I am running for Longmont City Council, Ward 3. I have enjoyed being a Council Member and have been a student of public policy all of my life. I want to continue to use that experience to find new solutions for Longmont’s issues. I want to apply a common sense approach along with a positive vision for the future.
